Chapter I: The Story & Human Friendship

The Charming Miniature Decoy of Holland

In the 1600s in the Netherlands, Dutch waterfowl breeders selected tiny ducks with round heads and short bills to create the smallest duck breed in existence: the Call Duck.

Originally named Kooiduck (Decoy Duck), their loud, cheerful, high-pitched quacks were used by duck keepers to call wild ducks into canal sanctuaries. Today, their adorable miniature proportions make them beloved farm and garden pets!

πŸ¦† The Pocket-Sized Waterfowl Superpower

Weighing under 1.5 pounds, Call Ducks are less than half the size of a standard Mallard!

  • Plush Round Heads: They feature chubby round cheeks, short stubby orange bills, and glossy waterproof feathers.
  • Natural Waterproofing: An oil gland near their tail allows them to spread water-repellent oil across every feather with their bill.

🌊 Splash Pools & Foraging Joy

Call Ducks love swimming! Provide a shallow plastic splash pool or garden pond where they can dive, paddle, and forage for water plants.

🏑 Creating a Call Duck Sanctuary

  • Predator Security: Because of their small size, secure 1/2-inch hardware cloth around their coop keeps them safe from wild owls and foxes at night.
  • Flock Bonding: Keep Call Ducks in pairs or small flocks so they can swim and groom together!
