Domesticated over 3,000 years ago by indigenous peoples of the Andes Mountains in South America, the Guinea Pig (or Cavy, Cavia porcellus) is one of the world’s most gentle, expressive small companion animals.

🥗 The Vitamin C Superpower Requirement

Unlike most animals that produce their own Vitamin C internally, Guinea Pigs (like humans and primates) lack the enzyme L-gulonolactone oxidase. To stay healthy, strong, and active, they require daily dietary Vitamin C from fresh red bell peppers, dark leafy greens, and fortified cavy pellets!

🍿 “Wheeking” & “Popcorning” Joy

Guinea Pigs communicate through vocal and physical expressions:

• The “Wheek!” Call: A high-pitched, enthusiastic WHEEK-WHEEK! sound emitted when they hear the refrigerator door open or a bag of fresh veggies rustling.
• Popcorning: When young cavies are overcome with joy, they perform a cute sudden vertical hop in the air, twisting their body like a popping kernel of popcorn!
