A chinchilla’s coat is the densest of any land mammal (80 hairs per pore!). If soaked in water:
- Trapped Moisture: Water gets trapped near the skin and cannot dry out.
- Fur Rot & Hypothermia: Trapped dampness causes fungal infections and rapid body chilling.

Chinchillas clean themselves by spinning and rolling in volcanic pumice dust 2 to 3 times a week! The dust absorbs skin oils and leaves their fur fluffy and clean.
